Welcome from Dr. JoAnne Nardone

††††††††††Welcome to the Milton School website.† This year we will be focusing on the many aspects of literacy.† A new district-wide curriculum for language arts was designed for grades K-2 that is challenging and stimulating for our students. This year the curriculum for grades 3-5 will be addressed.† Several initiatives pertaining to literacy have been planned for this year. Our students have been eagerly participating in a fall Read-A-Thon, and our Family Reading Night was highly successful.† During October, parents were invited to a series of literacy panels that focused on strategies to promote achievement in literacy in school and at home.† The fall book fair received rave reviews, and through the generosity of our parents, classroom libraries have been expanded and enhanced.
†††††††
††††††† Our Health and Wellness Committee remains active. Students will participate in special training sessions on hand-washing, and will have the opportunity to taste some new, healthy foods.† Parents in grades K-2 will be invited to have lunch with their children and learn about our school lunch program offerings.† Later on in the year we will be presenting additional initiatives.
†††††††
††††† † Character Education continues to be an important thread running through all curricula.† We are having great success with the Responsive Classroom Program and all teachers are utilizing strategies from this program to foster respect, a sense of community, and school spirit. Fourth and fifth graders continue to enjoy a variety of leadership opportunities as members of the Student Council, Peer Mediators, Fifth Grade Buddies, and Recycling Team, as well as being participants in several charity drives.
†††††††††
†††††††† The Cultural Enrichment program continues to thrive.† Circus Arts week was a resounding success and we congratulate our fourth graders for their wonderful performance. Students in fourth and fifth grade are enjoying our new Visual Literacy program in conjunction with the Jacob Burns Film Center.† Programs enhancing science and social studies will be presented throughout the year, and we look forward to our fall Star Lab planetarium.
†††††††††††
††††††††††We invite you to participate in our special events throughout the year.

With warm regards,
JoAnneNardone
